On May 1, 2003, Governor Tim Pawlenty signed Executive Order 03-07, creating the Governor's State Quarter Dollar Commission. The commission, which consisted of 15 state officials, legislators and citizens appointed by the Governor, was to select design concepts and recommend a final design for Minnesota's submission to the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury in accordance with the 50 States Commemorative Coin Program Act. The Minnesota state quarter was released by the U.S. Mint on April 12, 2005. The Education Department supplied administrative services for the commission and the Commissioner served as a commission member. The files contain a copy of the executive order; correspondence; commission agendas and appointments; information on the national program; press releases and media clippings; coverage of the release event for the quarter, including photographs; and submitted designs and ideas, many from school children.
